Lesson Learned the Hard Way

Thursday, September 20th, 2007 by admin

Many of us know that the cliché “you get what you pay for” is definitely true when it comes to certain situations and industries.  Silly me, I didn’t think it would apply to catering…a lesson I learned the hard way.

I was hosting a cocktail party for my best friend’s birthday.  With the help of her husband and my husband, we planned a fabulous little surprise get together for about 50 of our closest friends.  Since we decided to have an open bar, I decided to help cut costs by hiring a catering service that was less expensive than other caterers in the area.

Big mistake!  The guests were only able to choose from two entrees, the food was mediocre (at best), and the staff was comprised of awkward, clumsy high schoolers.  Not to mention, they almost ran out of food…there were only 50 people!

Just remember, you get what you pay for when it comes to catering!  The caterer you want may be more expensive but it will definitely be worth it.  I should have gone with the Utah caterer a friend recommended.  Oh well.  Hopefully everyone was too drunk to care!

I LOVE this site!

Yet another successful china replacement piece story!  I found the most darling tea set at a neighborhood garage sale last weekend; the only thing that was missing was one of the tea cups.  Edish to the rescue!  Not only did they find the matching piece but apparently the set (which I paid a whopping ten bucks for) is worth a pretty penny!  Don’t tell my husband! Ha…he’ll want to sell it!

Short on Cash?

Thursday, September 13th, 2007 by Kirsten G.

After paying all the bills, my husband and I seem to always be short on cash. Yet neither of us want to work more hours in a second job during the work week because it leaves us less time to spend together. We began searching for other side jobs for extra income that were flexible.

Initially I ignored all the work from home job opportunities. Yet I found a way to work from home without stuffing envelopes or selling Mary Kay (let’s face it, I don’t want a boring side job and I’m not a good salesperson). Previously I bought and sold several antique dresses and patterns on eBay. I read several people’s stories about the profits they had made selling items on eBay on the side and I decided to start selling more items on auction websites.

Although I could sell some of our junk on eBay for a small profit, I decided to sell quality items because I could make more money than selling used products. A friend recommended that I use a drop shipper for more products. I consulted a drop shipper comparison site and signed up for one that was associated with eBay. The drop shipper, Doba, connected me to about 170 wholesale distributors that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to use because they usually don’t work with small businesses or individuals.

I am so glad I decided to use a drop shipper! I can choose my products and set my own mark up price. It saves me a lot of time too because I don’t have to bother with going to the post office to ship products because the drop shipper sends them directly from the warehouse as soon as a customer orders it. Steadily, the auction sites have been pulling in more income for us. Now we can finally save for a vacation!

Organizing a Party? Choose the Right Salt Lake City Catering Company

Thursday, September 13th, 2007 by Mel

I just organized a huge event in Salt Lake City, and spent a lot of time agonizing over all of the details. There are so many things to consider when you’re planning a party for 120 people. This wasn’t even a wedding! It was my parents-in-law’s 50th wedding anniversary, and we needed top-notch entertainment, food, and decorations.

The entertainment and decorations were fairly easy, but choosing a Salt Lake City catering company was a bit more difficult. It always seems that people remember an event as being successful if the food is good. If the food is lousy, the event is seen as being a failure. I couldn’t fail my in-laws.

As I spoke with different catering companies, I realized that I had to get along with the team that would be fulfilling my order. I had to be comfortable that they could handle the size of the party. If I felt they weren’t sharp, I would worry the whole time that they would screw up the order or that the food wouldn’t turn out, or our guests would be left hungry.

In the end, the event turned out perfectly because the company I chose, Culinary Crafts, went above and beyond to make sure the food was superb, the display was beautiful, and my guests were never hungry. All of the guests were extremely pleased, and everyone talked about what a great event it was, and how good the food was. Just what I wanted to hear!

Utah Mountain Biking

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007 by admin

So my girlfriends and I just took a (much needed) very relaxing weekend trip to Park City, Utah.  Relaxing by the pool, shopping, and the spa treatments were fabulous, but surprisingly one my favorite parts was Utah mountain biking.  I know – who would have thought, right?  Exercise being that much fun?  But it was!  Not only was it a great calorie-burning workout, but the scenery was stunning.  Most people don’t think of Park City (or Utah in general) as a summer getaway, but the warm months are just as enjoyable as the world-famous winter skiing season!  Park City next summer, anyone?  Maybe this time we should stay more than three days.

A Dog Carrier Purse to Complete Your Fall Wardrobe

Monday, September 10th, 2007 by glamkate

If you love your beloved little furry pet as much as I do (okay, maybe obsessed is a more befitting term), a dog carrier purse is this fall’s hottest fashion accessory. Think Jessica Simpson toting Daisy in her Louis Vuitton or Paris with her tiny rat chihuahua. Cute faux animal skin, chunky buckle accents, and hot fall neutral colors…all minus the hefty price tag. Sign me up!

Halloween Entertainment: A Denver Haunted House

Friday, September 7th, 2007 by Mel

I just looked at my calendar, and realized Halloween is just around the corner. Now that my children are growing up (I have two teenagers now!), they’re not as into Trick-Or-Treating. At least the older ones aren’t - they would rather have their little ten year old sister go for them, but share her candy. She doesn’t like that - she does the work, so she’s going to want to keep the candy!

I was trying to come up with ideas to keep my teenagers entertained this Halloween, and I was considering the idea of hosting a party. The thought of a bunch of teenagers running through my house (in costumes, of course) didn’t sound very appealing, though, the more I thought about it. Then I thought…maybe I could have my teenagers each invite a few friends, and I would take them to our local Denver haunted house.

I’m the first to admit that I’m a chicken when it comes to haunted houses - they really scare me! But, it’s less scary to me than having to clean up after having a bunch of teenagers over for a Halloween party. At any rate, at least it will keep my teenagers occupied and out of trouble this Halloween. Wish me luck!

Needing a Spode China Replacement

Friday, September 7th, 2007 by Mel

With the Christmas season approaching, I decided to take an inventory of my Christmas china. I decided to organize all of my dishes this year because I have so many. My children even call me the “plate” lady because I just can’t resist purchasing new plates and china!

As I was going through my favorite Spode Christmas china, I dropped one of the plates. It shattered into thousands of pieces on my hard tile floor - and I was crushed. I didn’t know how I would ever find a replacement - I didn’t know if the china was even made anymore. If it was, I was sure that they wouldn’t let me purchase just one plate. I needed the full 16 place settings because my family was planning on having Christmas at my house this year, along with my parents and some of my siblings and their children.

Not knowing what to do, I looked online, trying to find a china replacement piece. I stumbled across Edish, a company that specializes in selling replacement china for people such as myself, that are missing one or two pieces from their sets.

I couldn’t believe it - they had my Spode Christmas china, and I was able to purchase the plate I needed. Once again, I had a complete set of my beloved dishes. To me, it was an early Christmas miracle!

Losing the Last of the Weight

Thursday, September 6th, 2007 by Kirsten G.

Recently I have taken a break from eating healthy and exercising, and I am paying the price. I have gained a few pounds and now I really need to lose at least 5 to 15 pounds to be at my ideal weight again. So how am I tackling this problem?

This time around I decided to try a different route to stick to my diet and exercise. I had heard that if you invest money in something, you are more likely to follow through. So I contacted a friend of mine that is a personal trainer and he recommended a personal trainer for me. If I had to pay for my workout sessions, I figured that I would be more likely to show up and succeed.

My trainer assessed my current weight, exercise, and eating habits, as well as my goals, then gave me a workout plan, eating plan, and recommended some supplements for me to try. He explained that a multivitamin and weight loss supplement would help me lose weight faster, and help for those days when I lost motivation or cheated on my plan.

I went to the local nutrition store and bought Akavar 20/50, as well as some multivitamins and other supplements. I started my exercise and eating plan and I am feeling good. I am glad to report that I have already lost 2 pounds this week! I will keep you up to date on my progress, but it is looking good so far.
